English Translation

The Purusha, seated in Prakriti, experiences the qualities born of Prakriti. Attachment to these qualities is the cause of its birth in good and evil wombs.

Commentary (टीका)

The soul, though pure and eternal, becomes entangled in worldly experience by identifying with the body and its qualities. This attachment to the Gunas determines the quality of future births — association with Sattva leads to higher births, Rajas to middle, and Tamas to lower births. Liberation comes from breaking this attachment through discrimination.
