बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम्।

मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः॥

Transliteration

Brihat-Sama Tatha Samnam Gayatri Chhandasam-Aham.

Masanam Marga-Shirsho'ham-Ritunam Kusumakarah.

Hindi Translation (हिन्दी अर्थ)

सामों में बृहत्साम हूँ, छन्दों में गायत्री हूँ, महीनों में मार्गशीर्ष (अगहन) हूँ और ऋतुओं में वसन्त (कुसुमाकर) हूँ।

English Translation

Of the Sama hymns I am the Brihat-Sama; of meters I am the Gayatri; of months I am Margashirsha (November-December); and of seasons I am the flower-bearing spring.

Commentary (टीका)

The Brihat-Sama is the most melodious and celebrated Sama hymn. The Gayatri meter is the most sacred Vedic meter, used in the famous Gayatri Mantra. Margashirsha is considered the purest month of the year. Spring (Vasanta) is the most beautiful season when nature blooms. Each represents the peak of excellence in its domain.
