आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपो

नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद।

विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमाद्यं

न हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम्॥

Akhyahi Me Ko Bhavan-Ugra-Rupo

Namo'stu Te Devavara Prasida.

Vijnatam-Ichchhami Bhavantam-Adyam

Na Hi Prajanami Tava Pravrittim.

मुझे बताइए कि उग्र रूप वाले आप कौन हैं? हे देवश्रेष्ठ! आपको नमस्कार, प्रसन्न होइए। मैं आपको जानना चाहता हूँ, क्योंकि मैं आपकी प्रवृत्ति नहीं समझ पा रहा।

English Translation

Tell me, who are You in this fierce form? Salutations to You, O best of gods, be gracious. I wish to know You, the Primal One, for I do not understand Your purpose.

Arjuna asks 'Who are You?' — the fierce cosmic form seems like an entirely different being. This question directly prompts the Gita's most iconic response.
