English Translation

Worship of the gods, the twice-born, teachers, and the wise; cleanliness, straightforwardness, celibacy, and non-violence — this is called the austerity of the body.

Commentary (टीका)

Physical austerity includes both devotional practices and ethical conduct. Worship, purity, simplicity, self-control, and non-violence together constitute bodily discipline. These are not punishments but practices that refine the physical instrument for higher spiritual purposes.
