English Translation

Some offer the incoming breath into the outgoing, and the outgoing into the incoming, while others, devoted to pranayama, restrain the movement of both breaths.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse describes the sacrifice of breath control (pranayama). Different practitioners merge the prana (inhalation) into apana (exhalation) and vice versa through various breathing techniques, while advanced practitioners suspend both movements entirely (kumbhaka). Pranayama is presented as a form of yajna where one's own life-breath becomes the offering.
