The Purushashtakam, known in Sanskrit as श्री पुरुषाष्टकम्, is an eight-verse devotional hymn in praise of Lord Vishnu. Rooted in Vedas and Upanishads (Purusha Suktam, Katha, Shvetashvatara, Taittiriya), this composition carries deep spiritual significance. Chanting this stotra with devotion is said to contain supreme Vedic and Upanishadic mantras on the Cosmic Purusha as well as reveal the ultimate identity of Vishnu as the cause of all creation. सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्।
स भूमिं सर्वतः स्पृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्॥१॥
पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भाव्यम्।
उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति॥२॥
विराडज्जायत पुरुषात् पुरुषो विराजः।
स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः॥३॥
पुरुषं महान्तं आदित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात्।
तमेवं विद्वानमृत इह भवति नान्यः पन्था विद्यते अयनाय॥४॥
अजायमानो बहुधा विजायते तस्य योनिं परिपश्यन्ति धीराः।
यस्मिन्निदं सं च विचैति सर्वं स वृक्ष इव स्थापितो दिवि॥५॥
एको देवः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा।
कर्माध्यक्षः सर्वभूताधिवासः साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश्च॥६॥
पतिं विश्वस्यात्मेश्वरं शाश्वतं शिवमच्युतम्।
नारायणं महाज्ञेयं विश्वात्मानं परायणम्॥७॥
यतो वा इमानि भूतानि जायन्ते येन जातानि जीवन्ति।
यत्प्रयन्त्यभिसंविशन्ति तद्विजिज्ञासस्व तद्ब्रह्म॥८॥
पुरुषाष्टकं यः पठेद्विद्वान् प्रातरुत्थाय सन्ततम्।
परमात्मनि योगयुक्तो ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नुयात्॥
