॥ श्री नीतिशतकम् ॥

॥ भर्तृहरिविरचितम् ॥

बोद्धारो मत्सरग्रस्ताः प्रभवः स्मयदूषिताः।

अबोधोपहताश्चान्ये जीर्णमङ्गे सुभाषितम्॥ १॥

विद्या नाम नरस्य रूपमधिकं प्रच्छन्नगुप्तं धनं

विद्या भोगकरी यशःसुखकरी विद्या गुरूणां गुरुः।

विद्या बन्धुजनो विदेशगमने विद्या परा देवता

विद्या राजसु पूज्यते न हि धनं विद्याविहीनः पशुः॥ २॥

साहित्यसंगीतकलाविहीनः

साक्षात्पशुः पुच्छविषाणहीनः।

तृणं न खादन्नपि जीवमानः

तद्भागधेयं परमं पशूनाम्॥ ३॥

केयूराणि न भूषयन्ति पुरुषं हारा न चन्द्रोज्ज्वला

न स्नानं न विलेपनं न कुसुमं नालंकृता मूर्धजाः।

वाण्येका समलंकरोति पुरुषं या संस्कृता धार्यते

क्षीयन्ते खलु भूषणानि सततं वाग्भूषणं भूषणम्॥ ४॥

परिवर्तिनि संसारे मृतः को वा न जायते।

स जातो येन जातेन याति वंशः समुन्नतिम्॥ ५॥

नमन्ति फलिनो वृक्षा नमन्ति गुणिनो जनाः।

शुष्ककाष्ठं च मूर्खश्च न नमन्ति कदाचन॥ ६॥

उद्यमेन हि सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः।

न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः॥ ७॥

दुर्जनः परिहर्तव्यो विद्ययालंकृतो यदि।

मणिना भूषितः सर्पः किमसौ न भयंकरः॥ ८॥

परोक्षे कार्यहन्तारं प्रत्यक्षे प्रियवादिनम्।

वर्जयेत्तादृशं मित्रं विषकुम्भं पयोमुखम्॥ ९॥

येषां न विद्या न तपो न दानं

ज्ञानं न शीलं न गुणो न धर्मः।

ते मर्त्यलोके भुवि भारभूताः

मनुष्यरूपेण मृगाश्चरन्ति॥ १०॥
