Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga - The Yoga of Division between Divine and Demoniac Qualities

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 16, Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga, presents Lord Krishna's detailed classification of divine (daivi) and demoniac (asuri) natures in human beings. Krishna enumerates twenty-six divine qualities including fearlessness, purity of heart, charity, self-control, and non-violence that lead to liberation. He contrasts these with demoniac traits such as hypocrisy, arrogance, anger, and ignorance that bind the soul to suffering. The chapter describes the destructive worldview of those with demoniac nature who deny God, live for selfish desires, and accumulate wealth through unjust means. Krishna identifies lust, anger, and greed as the three gates to hell and urges Arjuna to abandon them. The chapter concludes with the instruction to follow scriptural guidance in determining right and wrong action, assuring Arjuna that he is born with divine qualities.
अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः। दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम्॥
The Supreme Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in the yoga of knowledge, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerity, and straightforwardness — these are divine qualities.
Krishnaअहिंसा सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम्। दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम्॥
Non-violence, truthfulness, absence of anger, renunciation, peacefulness, absence of fault-finding, compassion for all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, and steadiness — these are divine qualities.
Krishnaतेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता। भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत॥
Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, absence of malice, and absence of excessive pride — O Bharata, these are the qualities of one born with divine nature.
Krishnaदम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च। अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम्॥
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance — O Partha, these are the qualities of one born with demoniac nature.
Krishnaदैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता। मा शुचः सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातोऽसि पाण्डव॥
The divine qualities lead to liberation and the demoniac qualities lead to bondage. Do not grieve, O Pandava, for you are born with divine nature.
Krishnaद्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिन्दैव आसुर एव च। दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शृणु॥
There are two types of beings in this world — the divine and the demoniac. The divine has been described in detail; now hear from Me about the demoniac, O Partha.
Krishnaप्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः। न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते॥
Those of demoniac nature do not know what to do and what to refrain from. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truth is found in them.
Krishnaअसत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम्। अपरस्परसम्भूतं किमन्यत्कामहैतुकम्॥
They say that this world is unreal, without foundation, and without a God. It is produced by mutual union alone, caused by nothing other than desire.
Krishnaएतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः। प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतोऽहिताः॥
Holding this view, these lost souls of small intellect and cruel deeds arise as enemies of the world, bringing about its destruction.
Krishnaकाममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः। मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः॥
Taking refuge in insatiable desires, full of hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, holding false views through delusion, they act with impure resolve.
Krishnaचिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः। कामोपभोगपरमा एतावदिति निश्चिताः॥
Beset with immeasurable anxieties that end only with death, regarding sense enjoyment as the highest goal, they are convinced that this is all there is.
Krishnaआशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः। ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान्॥
Bound by hundreds of ties of desire, given over to lust and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the gratification of their desires.
Krishnaइदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम्। इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम्॥
'Today I have gained this; tomorrow I shall fulfill this desire. This wealth is mine, and that also shall be mine' — thus they think.
Krishnaअसौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि। ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी॥
'That enemy has been slain by me, and I shall slay others too. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am perfect, powerful, and happy' — thus they think.
Krishnaआढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया। यक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः॥
'I am wealthy and of noble birth. Who else is equal to me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give charity, I shall rejoice' — thus deluded by ignorance.
Krishnaअनेकचित्तविभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः। प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतन्ति नरकेऽशुचौ॥
Bewildered by many anxious thoughts, entangled in a net of delusion, and addicted to sense pleasures, they fall into a foul hell.
Krishnaआत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः। यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्॥
Self-conceited, obstinate, intoxicated by wealth and pride, they perform sacrifices in name only, hypocritically, without following proper rules.
Krishnaअहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः। मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः॥
Taking refuge in egotism, force, arrogance, desire, and anger, these malicious people hate Me who dwells in their own bodies and in the bodies of others.
Krishnaतानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान्संसारेषु नराधमान्। क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु॥
Those hateful, cruel, and vile — the lowest of mankind — I repeatedly cast into demoniac wombs in the cycle of birth and death.
Krishnaआसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि। मामप्राप्यैव कौन्तेय ततो यान्त्यधमां गतिम्॥
Attaining demoniac wombs birth after birth, these deluded souls never reach Me, O Kaunteya, and thus sink to the lowest state.
Krishnaत्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः। कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्॥
There are three gates to hell that lead to the destruction of the self — lust, anger, and greed. Therefore, one should abandon all three.
Krishnaएतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः। आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिम्॥
A person who is freed from these three gates of darkness, O Kaunteya, practices what is good for the self and thus attains the supreme destination.
Krishnaयः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः। न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम्॥
He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.
Krishnaतस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ। ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि॥
