Raja Vidya Raja Guhya Yoga - The Yoga of Royal Knowledge and Royal Secret
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 9, Raja Vidya Raja Guhya Yoga, is considered one of the most important and devotion-filled chapters of the Gita. Krishna calls this teaching the king of all knowledge (Raja Vidya) and the king of all secrets (Raja Guhya) — the most sacred, supreme, directly realizable, and imperishable wisdom. He reveals His all-pervading nature: the entire universe is pervaded by His unmanifest form, all beings exist within Him yet He is not confined to them. He is the father, mother, grandfather, and sustainer of the entire cosmos, the Vedas themselves, and the syllable Om. The chapter contains some of the most beloved verses of the Gita — 'Ananyash Chintayanto Mam' promises that God personally carries the yoga-kshema of His single-minded devotees, 'Patram Pushpam Phalam Toyam' declares that even a leaf offered with devotion is lovingly accepted, and 'Samo Aham Sarva Bhuteshu' affirms God's perfect equality toward all beings while simultaneously affirming that devotees dwell in Him. The chapter closes with Krishna's compassionate assurance that His devotee never perishes.
The Blessed Lord said: To you who are free from envy, I shall now reveal this most secret knowledge combined with realized wisdom, knowing which you shall be freed from all misery and inauspiciousness.
This is the king of all knowledge, the king of all secrets, supremely purifying, directly realizable through experience, righteous, very easy and joyful to practice, and imperishable.
O scorcher of foes, those who have no faith in this dharma, failing to attain Me, return to the path of death and rebirth in this material world.
This entire universe is pervaded by Me in My unmanifest form. All beings exist within Me, but I am not contained in them.
And yet beings do not dwell in Me — behold My divine Yoga (supreme power)! My Self is the source and sustainer of all beings, yet I do not dwell in them.
Just as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, always rests in space (akasha), so know that all beings rest in Me.
O son of Kunti, at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), all beings merge back into My Prakriti (nature). At the beginning of the next cycle, I create them again.
Presiding over My own Prakriti (material nature), I project forth again and again this entire multitude of beings, who are helpless under the sway of Prakriti.
O Dhananjaya, these actions do not bind Me, for I remain as if seated indifferently, unattached to those actions.
Under My supervision, Prakriti (material nature) produces all moving and non-moving beings. By this reason, O son of Kunti, the world revolves through its cycles.
The foolish disregard Me when I dwell in a human form, not knowing My supreme nature as the great Lord of all beings.
Those deluded ones are of baffled hopes, futile actions, and misguided knowledge. They take shelter of the bewildering demoniac and atheistic nature.
But the great souls (Mahatmas), O Partha, taking shelter of the divine nature, worship Me with undivided mind, knowing Me as the imperishable origin of all beings.
Always glorifying Me, striving with firm resolve, bowing down to Me with devotion, ever united with Me, they worship Me.
Others, worshipping through the sacrifice of knowledge, worship Me as oneness (non-dual), as separate (dual), and in many forms as the Universal Being facing everywhere.
I am the Vedic ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the ancestors, I am the healing herb, I am the sacred mantra, I am the clarified butter, I am the fire, and I am the act of offering.
I am the father of this universe, the mother, the sustainer, and the grandfather. I am the object of all knowledge, the purifier, the sacred syllable Om, and I am the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.
I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, the well-wishing friend, the origin, the dissolution, the foundation, the resting place, and the imperishable seed.
O Arjuna, I give heat (as the sun). I withhold and send forth rain. I am both immortality and death, being and non-being — I am all of this.
Those who know the three Vedas, who drink the Soma juice, who are purified of sins, worship Me through sacrifices and pray for passage to heaven. They reach the holy world of Indra and enjoy divine celestial pleasures.
Having enjoyed the vast heavenly world, when their merit is exhausted, they return to the mortal world. Thus, following the Vedic rituals driven by desire, they attain only the cycle of coming and going.
Those who worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on Me with no other thought — to those ever-steadfast devotees, I personally carry what they lack (yoga) and preserve what they have (kshema).
O son of Kunti, even those who are devoted to other gods and worship them with faith — they too are worshipping Me alone, though in an indirect and improper manner.
For I alone am the enjoyer and the Lord of all sacrifices. But they do not know Me in truth (as the Supreme), and therefore they fall (from the higher attainment).
Worshippers of the devas go to the devas, worshippers of ancestors go to the ancestors, worshippers of spirits go to the spirits — but My devotees come to Me.
Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water — that offering of love, made with a pure heart, I lovingly accept.
O son of Kunti, whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give in charity, whatever austerity you perform — do all of that as an offering to Me.
Thus, with your mind established in the Yoga of renunciation, you shall be freed from the bondage of both good and bad karmic results. Liberated, you shall come to Me.
I am equal to all beings; none is hateful to Me, none is dear. But those who worship Me with devotion — they are in Me, and I am in them.
Even if a person of very bad conduct worships Me with exclusive and undivided devotion, that person should be regarded as a saint, for they have rightly resolved.
Such a person quickly becomes righteous and attains eternal peace. O son of Kunti, declare boldly that My devotee never perishes!
O Partha, taking refuge in Me, even those born of sinful origin, women, vaishyas, and shudras — they all attain the supreme destination.
How much more, then, for the virtuous brahmanas and devoted royal sages! Having obtained birth in this temporary and joyless world, devote yourself to worshipping Me.
Fix your mind on Me, be My devotee, worship Me, and bow to Me. Thus, uniting your self with Me, with Me as your supreme goal, you shall certainly come to Me.
